APA Style Reporting Guide for Statistical Results
One of the most frustrating parts of writing a thesis or research paper is formatting your statistical results in APA style. The rules feel arbitrary at first, but they exist to make research findings clear and comparable across studies. This guide gives you copy-paste templates for every common test.
General APA Rules for Statistics
Before we get to specific tests, here are the universal rules:
- Italicize statistical symbols: M, SD, t, F, r, p, N, n, df, R²
- Round to two decimal places (except p-values, which get three)
- No leading zero before p-values or correlations (write p = .032, not p = 0.032)
- Use exact p-values when possible (e.g., p = .017), but write p < .001 when very small
- Report effect sizes alongside every significance test
Descriptive Statistics
When reporting means and standard deviations:
Participants scored an average of M = 74.2 (SD = 12.8) on the knowledge test.
For a table of descriptive statistics, include M, SD, and N for each group.
Independent Samples t-Test
An independent samples t-test revealed a significant difference in exam scores between the tutorial group (M = 82.1, SD = 8.3) and the lecture group (M = 74.6, SD = 10.7), t(58) = 3.12, p = .003, d = 0.81.
Key components:
- Both group means and SDs
- t value with degrees of freedom in parentheses
- Exact p-value
- Cohen's d for effect size
Paired Samples t-Test
A paired samples t-test showed that scores significantly increased from pre-test (M = 65.4, SD = 11.2) to post-test (M = 78.9, SD = 9.8), t(29) = 5.67, p < .001, d = 1.04.
One-Way ANOVA
A one-way ANOVA indicated a statistically significant difference in satisfaction across the three service types, F(2, 87) = 6.34, p = .003, η² = .13. Tukey post-hoc tests revealed that Service A (M = 4.2, SD = 0.8) scored significantly higher than Service C (M = 3.4, SD = 1.1), p = .002.
Two-Way ANOVA
A 2 × 3 between-subjects ANOVA was conducted. There was a significant main effect of gender, F(1, 114) = 8.92, p = .003, η² = .07, and a significant main effect of treatment, F(2, 114) = 12.45, p < .001, η² = .18. The interaction effect was not significant, F(2, 114) = 1.23, p = .296, η² = .02.
Pearson Correlation
There was a strong positive correlation between study hours and exam scores, r(48) = .72, p < .001.
For multiple correlations, present them in a correlation matrix table.
Simple Linear Regression
A simple linear regression was conducted to predict exam scores from study hours. The model was statistically significant, F(1, 48) = 45.67, p < .001, R² = .49. Study hours significantly predicted exam scores, B = 3.42, SE = 0.51, t = 6.76, p < .001.
Multiple Regression
A multiple regression was run to predict customer satisfaction from response time, product quality, and price fairness. The model was statistically significant, F(3, 96) = 28.34, p < .001, R² = .47, adjusted R² = .45. Product quality (β = .42, p < .001) and price fairness (β = .31, p = .002) significantly predicted satisfaction, while response time did not (β = .08, p = .387).
Chi-Square Test of Independence
A chi-square test of independence was performed to examine the relationship between gender and preference. The relation was significant, χ²(2, N = 120) = 9.87, p = .007, Cramér's V = .29.
Tips for Your Thesis
- Be consistent - Pick a format and stick with it throughout your paper
- Always include effect sizes - Reviewers and supervisors increasingly require them
- Use tables for complex results - If you have more than three or four statistics to report, a table is clearer than inline text
- Check your program output - SPSS provides most of these values; you just need to know where to find them
- Proofread your numbers - A decimal in the wrong place can change your entire finding
Common Mistakes
- Writing p = .000 (SPSS shows this, but you should write p < .001)
- Forgetting to italicize statistical symbols
- Not reporting degrees of freedom
- Using "significant" without specifying the alpha level or p-value
- Mixing up r (correlation) and R² (coefficient of determination)
